Worms & Wormeries

What is a Wormery?

wormery is a composting unit that has been specifically designed to contain worms, who, in return for a good dose of waste and scraps, will produce a nutrient rich liquid feed and compost for your garden.

How Does a Wormery Work?

The wormery unit will consist of separate areas, each is designed for a specific purpose and the design will be slightly different depending on your chosen size and shape of wormery. Worms live on a combination of green matter and natural (uncooked) kitchen waste. Worms are not carnivores, so please do not feed them meat or fish, they will be very happy with your other kitchen scraps such as raw peelings, fruit and vegetables, egg shells and even plain cardboard and paper.

Why Choose a Wormery?

By enlisting the natural waste disposal tendencies of a whole army of friendly garden worms, you will save both time and money as well as helping the environment. Composting can be a long procedure, with a whole compost bin taking up to a year to mature, but with the help of worms you can cut this time in half, meaning that your compost will be ready for use in as little as six months.

In addition, the worms will excrete what they have consumed in a highly concentrated form, creating a nutrient rich compost that contains as much as 5 times the amount of bio enriching fuel as normal compost. Choosing a wormery with a liquid collecting facility will also allow you to collect vital compost juices that can be diluted with water and used to feed your plants. The wormery will therefore reduce the need for you to buy compost from the garden centre, saving you valuable time and money for years to come.

Another advantage of having your own wormery is that by adding your waste to this facility, instead of to your bin, will reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill. This vital lesson in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle can also be used to teach children about the importance of environmental protection.

Which Wormery to Choose?

There are many varieties of wormery, ranging in size so that you can pick one to suit your garden. If you have a child, visiting grandchildren, or are inquisitive yourself, choose a wormery with viewing panel so that you can enjoy watching the worms doing their work preparing your compost.
