Garden Pest Control

Slugs and snails will soon be getting more active as the weather warms up and they will love snacking on your tender seedlings. These pests are active overnight and can devastate a crop while you are sleeping! If you would rather not use slug pellets why not try a biological control - tiny microscopic organisms that you simply water into the ground around your precious plants.

Nemaslug Slug Killer

Nemaslug consists of naturally occurring nematodes (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) and controls all common species of small to medium sized slugs (up to 8cm - 2½-3 inches) both above and below ground.

Very easy to use Nemaslug is simply mixed with water in a bucket and watered into the soil beneath your plants with a watering can. One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of soil, giving at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established. Nemaslug is easy to apply and does not leave any unsightly residues. The majority of the slugs will die underground, so don't expect to see too many dead slugs lying around but you will notice that your plants are healthier with less unsightly holes in the leaves.

Apply Nemaslug to moist soil. The soil temperature should be 5ºC (40ºF) or over, this is also when plants naturally start growing in spring. The nematodes are completely harmless to birds, animals and children. Start your slug control regime early and you will be able to target the young slugs growing under the ground feeding on humus.

Nemasys Vine Weevil Control

Equally important is the control of Vine Weevil iin container grown plants. The damage the adult vine weevils do to plants is easy to recognise as they leave distinctive crescent-shaped notches on leaves. Finding and destroying the adults is difficult as they are nocturnal, quick moving and play dead once disturbed.

The vine weevil grub (larvae) is far more of a danger to plants than the adults. The young larvae feed on plant root systems, initially on small fine outer roots, but progressively attacking the more important main roots as they grow bigger. The first signs of attack by the larvae are usually when the plant starts to wilt. This is too late to save it!

The biological control – Nemasys – contains the nematodes (Steinernema kraussei), they seek out the vine weevil larvae and attack the pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that stops the larvae from feeding, quickly killing it. They don’t stop there. The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey.

Ants, Aphids, Whitefly & Spider Mites

Other biological controls for you to try are Ant Nest Nematodes for ant infestations and Aphid Control with Lacewing Larvae which feed on these irritating little bugs and other small insects such as Thrips, Red Spider Mite and Mealy Bugs.

SB Plant Invigorator is used by professional and amateur growers and gardeners worldwide to help to produce quality fruit, vegetables, flowers, bushes, shrubs and trees. It controls a wide range of important pest species that include Whitefly, Aphids, Mealybugs and Spider Mite.

These pests are highly unlikely to become resistant to SB Plant Invigorator if correctly applied. Suitable for use all year round it can also help control mildew. It has a physical mode of action and is a stimulant foliar feed for healthy plant growth, is biodegradable and non-toxic so no harvest interval is necessary when using in the vegetable garden. It helps prevent chlorosis and improve foliage colour and vigour of all plants.
